How did my cell phone get to be a necessity?

Most of my life I did not have a cell phone. And I really didnt know that there was anything missing. Even today, though I carry one around with me (usually), I dont use it everyday and only when I have an emergency or need something and another phone isnt readily available. I do see people who use them all the time, but I really dont think that I need to be instantly available to the world 24/7.

However, when I really needed one, I had left it behind. Today on the way to the mall, our tire blew out - on the highway of course - going 65 miles an hour. And of course in between exits that were fairly far apart. When my daughter realized that we had no cell phone with us, she began to panic. I mean what were we going to do. Traffic going by at 60+ miles an hour, miles from anything. To me it was just another inconvenient adventure, I mean I'd been here before. Before the emergence of cell phones I'd had car troubles on highways, and back roads. So to me it was just a matter of picking the right option for getting us help. Do I change the tire myself? Wait for the police to wander by and see if they can reach AAA? Walk (my least favorite option with a 7 year old on a major highway)? Or hitch a ride with one of the motorists (also not popular - with a 7 year old in a stranger's car)?

Well we waited a bit - the police did go by in the northbound lane (we were in the southbound side), but they didnt turn around at the cut off and 15 minutes later no other police had gone by. We did end up getting a ride from some folks who stopped to see if all was ok. Got a ride to the nearest exit and phone and called AAA (of course they wanted a call back number and there was none on the payphone).

I guess we start relying on things, even though they are relatively new to our lives. I mean 20 years ago, I wouldnt have even thought twice about needing a cell phone with me when I was making a quick trip to the mall. Now if seems to be a need for times when you are out there and need to get in touch with the world.

Technology does have its advantages, and I guess this is one of them. Well, I'm off to find my phone now, to put it in my pocket. Maybe I will buy one of the pay for minutes phones to leave in the glove compartment to save us some stress, should an emergency or breakdown occur again. I am considering adding a cell phone to the emergency and first aid kit that I keep in the car.
